WILMINGTON, N.C. – A grim tale of drug trafficking has culminated in a 16-year federal prison sentence for Keymon Leahke Cofield, also known as “Keymoney” and “Boi Fat,” who sold deadly fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose.
Cofield, now 25, pleaded guilty on April 22, 2025, to distributing fentanyl and heroin, as well as possession with intent to distribute both substances. His distribution spree reached a tragic end in Cary, North Carolina, where the consequences were dire.
In June 2020, officers from the Cary Police Department responded to a chilling 911 call reporting a suspected overdose at a hotel. They discovered a 35-year-old man dead in the room, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and 50 bindles of heroin and fentanyl. One of the bindles had been used, ultimately causing the victim’s death. Lab tests confirmed the presence of fentanyl, which was traced back to Cofield.
The investigation revealed that Cofield, then 20, traveled from Henderson to Cary specifically to sell the drugs. The probe intensified in July and August 2020, with undercover officers making multiple purchases of heroin from him, totaling over 750 bindles. On August 5, Cofield was arrested during another deal, and law enforcement seized an additional 651 bindles containing a deadly mix of substances.
Searches of Cofield’s phone uncovered photographs of large sums of cash and firearms, further solidifying his role in the drug trade. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer C. Nucci prosecuted the case, while Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announced the sentence after sentencing by Chief United States District Judge Richard E. Myers II.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Cary Police Department played pivotal roles in this investigation, which highlights the devastating impact of fentanyl on communities across the nation.
