GRIMY NEWS ALERT: Herbert Smallwood, a 42-year-old resident of Suitland, Maryland, was meted out a 275-month prison term today for the fatal stabbing of an acquaintance in Southeast Washington. The grim incident unfolded on June 30, 2021, when Smallwood followed his victim’s car until it crashed and flipped over. With a knife in hand, he brutally stabbed Joseph Ogundoju, 46, numerous times before fleeing. Ogundoju succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Smallwood entered a guilty plea on April 4, 2022, to second-degree murder while armed, a charge accepted by the Honorable Milton C. Lee, Jr., who sentenced him to nearly 23 years in prison. Following his release from custody, Smallwood will be subjected to five years of supervised release.
The evidence presented by the government depicted a chilling scene where surveillance video captured Smallwood’s SUV trailing the Ford Focus driven by Ogundoju before the crash. The bloodstains found on Smallwood’s clothing further linked him to the tragic event. His arrest was made that very day, and he has remained in custody since.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Robert J. Contee III commended the diligent work of MPD in investigating this case. They also recognized the invaluable contributions of Latrice Washington-Williams, Victim/Witness Advocate, Grazy Rivera, Paralegal Specialist, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Ganjei, who prosecuted the matter with determination.
This devastating crime serves as a stark reminder of the violence that can emanate from personal disputes, and it underscores the importance of swift and effective law enforcement to protect communities from such heinous acts.
