ANCHORAGE, AK – A petty theft at a health food store unraveled a significant heroin distribution network, landing Jason Paul Bryant-Wilde, 44, of Anchorage, a five-year federal prison sentence. U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason handed down the sentence today, followed by four years of supervised release, after Bryant-Wilde was convicted of possession of heroin with intent to distribute.
The downfall began August 25, 2016, at the Natural Pantry. According to court documents, Bryant-Wilde brazenly walked out with over $200 worth of unpaid groceries. A loss prevention officer confronted him in the parking lot, leading to a brief scuffle before Bryant-Wilde was detained. It wasn’t the stolen groceries that sealed his fate, however.
While awaiting the arrival of the Anchorage Police Department, the loss prevention officer conducted a search of Bryant-Wilde. The search revealed a staggering amount of heroin – over 100 grams, with an estimated street value of approximately $30,000. Authorities quickly pivoted from a simple shoplifting case to a full-blown drug trafficking investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly Cavanaugh led the prosecution, presenting evidence that clearly demonstrated Bryant-Wilde’s intent to distribute the heroin. The conviction underscores the fact that even seemingly minor offenses can expose larger criminal enterprises, and that those involved in peddling poison on our streets will face serious consequences.
Acting U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder praised the collaborative effort that brought Bryant-Wilde to justice. “This case highlights the importance of cooperation between federal, state, and even private sector entities,” Schroder stated. He specifically commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Anchorage Police Department (APO), and the vigilant loss prevention team at Natural Pantry.
The five-year sentence sends a clear message: in Alaska, dealing heroin doesn’t pay. Bryant-Wilde will now have plenty of time to contemplate his choices behind bars, while law enforcement continues to target those who profit from addiction and endanger our communities.
