Rachel Rangel, 29, of Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced yesterday to eight years in federal prison for her central role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy that funneled over one kilogram of the deadly drug into Alaska. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason, includes five years of supervised release following her incarceration.
Rangel pleaded guilty on June 29, 2016, to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin. Federal prosecutors revealed that beginning in spring 2014, Rangel established a supply line from southern California and orchestrated a network of female couriers recruited from Alaska and Florida to transport the narcotics via commercial flights into Anchorage.
Once the couriers arrived, Rangel took possession of the heroin and distributed it through her local network for profit. Over the course of just over a year, she oversaw the smuggling and sale of more than 1,000 grams of heroin, fueling addiction and endangering lives across the Anchorage area.
At sentencing, Judge Gleason emphasized the far-reaching damage of Rangel’s operation—not only to the users who became addicted or overdosed on the drugs she distributed, but also to the women she exploited as couriers, many of whom faced severe legal consequences and personal risk. The court noted that her actions fed directly into the broader national heroin epidemic.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy D. Edmonds, the case was built through coordinated surveillance, informant testimony, and interdiction efforts that exposed the full scope of Rangel’s drug network. Her conviction marks a significant disruption in a trafficking pipeline that relied on the anonymity of air travel and the vulnerability of her accomplices.
U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler praised the collaborative effort behind the investigation, commending the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Alaska State Troopers, and the Anchorage Airport Police for their relentless work in dismantling the operation. Rangel will begin serving her sentence immediately.
