CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Ray Robertson, 53, of Cedar Rapids, is facing the consequences after a federal investigation caught him red-handed arranging heroin purchases through his cell phone. The bust, stemming from a court-authorized wiretap, resulted in a $3,000 fine and a three-year term of federal probation, including 60 days of home detention.
Robertson pleaded guilty on November 1, 2018, to the charge of using a communication facility to commit a felony drug crime. The details revealed in court show that law enforcement intercepted multiple calls and text messages where Robertson negotiated the purchase of heroin. While seemingly a simple transaction, Robertson’s prior drug convictions elevated the act to a federal felony.
U.S. District Court Judge C.J. Williams delivered the sentence in Cedar Rapids on May 14, 2019. Beyond the financial penalty and home confinement, Robertson’s probation will require strict adherence to federal guidelines, a constant shadow for a man with a history of drug involvement. The feds aren’t messing around with repeat offenders.
The investigation was a coordinated effort under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program, a multi-agency initiative designed to dismantle large-scale drug operations. The DEA Task Force, comprised of agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Rapids Police Department, Marion Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, all played a role in building the case against Robertson.
Assistant United States Attorney Justin Lightfoot prosecuted the case, demonstrating the federal government’s commitment to tackling drug crime in Iowa. The wiretap, a controversial but effective tool, proved crucial in securing a conviction. While Robertson avoided a lengthy prison sentence, the fine and probation serve as a stark warning to others involved in the drug trade.
