BROKEN BONES AND BROKEN LIVES: Heroin’s Deadly Grip on Schenectady
A jury in Albany has delivered a guilty verdict against 36-year-old Raymond P. Baker, a Schenectady man accused of orchestrating a heroin conspiracy that wreaked havoc on local communities.
According to prosecutors, Baker and an accomplice sold massive quantities of heroin in Latham and Albany, with evidence suggesting the amount involved exceeded 100 grams.
The jury’s decision was reached after a four-day trial, which showcased the devastating impact of heroin on families and neighborhoods.
Baker now faces a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison, with a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 8 years and up to life, when he is sentenced on May 9, 2016 by Senior United States District Judge Thomas J. McAvoy.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Barnett, Wayne A. Myers, and Elizabeth R. Rabe.
As Schenectady struggles to combat the heroin epidemic, this conviction sends a strong message that those responsible for peddling this poison will face the full force of the law.
