Gilberto Arteaga, a 43-year-old Mexican national, was sentenced to 19 years and five months in prison for his role in a fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy in Fresno County, California. Between October 1, 2022, and July 16, 2023, Arteaga and his co-conspirators smuggled large quantities of fentanyl and methamphetamine across the border, using a car with a modified gas tank to transport the drugs. The operation was busted on July 15, 2023, when law enforcement agents stopped two cars, one of which contained approximately 30 pounds of methamphetamine and more than 6 pounds of fentanyl.
Arteaga pleaded guilty to the charge on May 19, 2025, and is the last defendant in this case to be sentenced. The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Fresno and Clovis Police Departments, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin J. Gilio.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating transnational crime and cartels. Arteaga’s sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the danger that fentanyl and methamphetamine pose to communities in California and across the United States.
The sentencing of Arteaga brings an end to a major drug trafficking operation in Fresno County, and demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to disrupting and dismantling these types of organizations. The use of a modified gas tank to smuggle drugs is a tactics often used by cartels, and the bust highlights the importance of vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
