Heroin Smuggling Rocks Orlando Airport: Flight Attendant and Co-Conspirator Indicted

Orlando, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, a 43-year-old Davenport man and his 33-year-old Kissimmee girlfriend, a Jet Blue flight attendant, have been indicted for their alleged roles in a heroin smuggling operation at the Orlando International Airport.

Carlos Luis Alomar-Baello, 43, and Carla Michelle Alvarado, 33, face a minimum penalty of ten years and a maximum penalty of life in federal prison if convicted of their charges. The indictment, returned by a grand jury, alleges that the couple conspired to possess with intent to distribute at least one kilogram of heroin.

According to court documents, Alvarado was selected for inspection by Customs officers on September 28, 2013, after landing on a flight from Bogota, Colombia. A body suit hidden underneath her uniform contained nearly one kilogram of heroin, which was discovered by Customs agents.

Agents identified Alomar as the intended recipient of the heroin and arranged a meeting with him the next day. Alomar was arrested after taking possession of a bag he believed contained the illicit substance. A search of his home revealed even more heroin hidden there.

An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of the federal criminal laws, and every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Bruce Ambrose will be prosecuting the case.

The allegations against Alomar and Alvarado are a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against heroin trafficking in our community. As this case moves forward, the public will be kept informed of any developments.
