Shauntavus Berklin, Possessing Firearms as a Convicted Felon and Peddling Fentanyl, Florida 2022

FORT MYERS, FL – Shauntavus Berklin, 34, of Fort Myers, is facing fifteen years behind bars after a federal judge handed down the sentence today for a cocktail of serious federal offenses: possessing firearms as a convicted felon and peddling fentanyl. The sentence, delivered by U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber, also includes forfeiture of the illegal firearms Berklin possessed. He’d already pleaded guilty on July 14, 2022, attempting to cut a deal that ultimately failed to soften the blow.

The trouble began back in October 2020, when Lee County Sheriff’s deputies zeroed in on a vehicle connected to a home invasion robbery. The car led them to a Fort Myers hotel room occupied by Berklin and another suspect. A search turned up two loaded firearms cleverly concealed within a mattress box spring. Forensic work quickly linked one of the weapons to Berklin – a man already well-acquainted with the inside of a prison, having recently completed a ten-year stretch.

But Berklin didn’t learn his lesson. Just three and a half months later, on January 30, 2021, Fort Myers Police detectives spotted Berklin behind the wheel of a rental car. When they tried to pull him over, Berklin bolted, leading officers on a high-speed chase before crashing in a residential neighborhood and making a run for it on foot. The abandoned vehicle yielded another loaded firearm and multiple baggies of fentanyl, clearly packaged for street sales. DNA confirmed Berklin’s connection to the gun, as did a bail bondsman receipt addressed to his nickname, “Tweet.”

The drug dealing didn’t stop there. In April 2021, Berklin engaged in two separate fentanyl sales to a confidential informant working with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Each transaction took place in the parking lots of local Fort Myers businesses, with Berklin knowingly providing the drugs while under constant law enforcement surveillance. The total haul from those two deals: $1,800.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fort Myers Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Trenton Reichling and Michael V. Leeman handled the prosecution. This case is being touted as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” initiative, a broad effort to curb violent crime and gun violence.

The feds are framing this sentencing as a win for community safety, claiming it’s a step toward making neighborhoods safer. But for Shauntavus Berklin, it’s a fifteen-year reality check, a grim reminder that repeated brushes with the law eventually lead to a long stay in federal prison. His pattern of criminal behavior, from firearms possession to drug distribution, has finally caught up with him.
