A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for his role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy in the Hazleton area of Pennsylvania.
Edwin Laureano-Suarez, 35, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion for conspiring with others to distribute heroin between May 2014 and June 18, 2014.
The defendant previously admitted to participating in the conspiracy, which was uncovered through an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Scranton Police.
Laureano-Suarez was charged in a criminal Information filed on August 12, 2014, and was found guilty of his involvement in the heroin trafficking ring.
The sentencing comes after a thorough investigation by the authorities, who worked tirelessly to bring the defendant to justice.
As part of his sentence, Laureano-Suarez will serve three years of supervised release following his prison term, and will pay a special assessment of $100.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa prosecuted the case, which highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat heroin trafficking in the region.
The Hazleton area has been heavily affected by heroin addiction, and the sentencing of Laureano-Suarez serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of involvement in heroin trafficking.
