Heroin Trafficking Ringleader Sentenced to 70 Months

SCRANTON—Sean Griffin, a 24-year-old heroin trafficker known as ‘Kritical,’ has been dealt a crushing blow as the Third Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his 70-month prison sentence. Griffin’s woes began on May 2, 2017, when U.S. District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion handed down the sentence.

Griffin had initially pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin in November 2016. However, he attempted to reduce his sentence by arguing that he was a minor participant in the drug conspiracy. But the Court disagreed, citing multiple witnesses who identified Griffin as a key distributor of heroin for the Black P-Stone gang.

Griffin’s extensive involvement in the drug trade saw him distribute large quantities of heroin throughout Maine and Pennsylvania. His efforts were instrumental in the conspiracy’s success, making him a vital part of the operation. The Court noted that Griffin was a ‘four-star general’ in the parlance of the conspiracy, underlining his significant role.

Griffin’s troubles began in September 2015, when he was indicted by a federal grand jury. A superseding indictment in October 2016 widened the net, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Pennsylvania State Police, and local police from Monroe County joined forces to investigate the Black P-Stones’ drug trafficking and sex trafficking activities.

Griffin admitted to distributing heroin in both Pennsylvania and Maine, as part of his guilty plea. He was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Francis P. Sempa, who also handled the appeal for the government.

The Court’s decision has dealt a severe blow to Griffin, who will now spend an additional 70 months behind bars. The case serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of heroin trafficking and the importance of law enforcement’s collaborative efforts in combating these crimes.

The Black P-Stones gang’s involvement in the heroin trade has been a subject of intense scrutiny, with their activities extending beyond the borders of Pennsylvania.
