GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN
Jimmie ‘Peanut’ Butler, a man accused of playing a key role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy that spanned across Michigan and into the Upper Peninsula, has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The investigation into Butler’s activities uncovered a vast network of heroin distribution that trafficked the lethal substance from Chicago into the Holland area and the Upper Peninsula. This network was linked to numerous overdoses and at least one death.
According to the investigation, which was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Michigan State Police – West Michigan Enforcement Team, the Holland Department of Public Safety, and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Butler conspired to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin and to possess with intent to distribute cocaine base.
Five of Butler’s co-defendants had previously pled guilty to federal charges stemming from the distribution of heroin in the Holland, Michigan area. Michael McKinley, one of the co-defendants, was sentenced to 24 months’ incarceration. Corey Gross was sentenced to 46 months’ incarceration. Monique Molina was sentenced to 24 months’ incarceration.
The investigation into Butler’s activities was praised by U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge, who said, ‘In the face of the opioid epidemic, the U.S. Attorney’s Office aggressively pursues those who poison our communities with heroin.’ Birge also credited the cooperation of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies for the success of the investigation.
Butler’s sentencing marks the latest development in a long-running investigation into the heroin trafficking conspiracy. The remaining defendants, including Jimmy Moore, face mandatory minimum sentences ranging from five to 40 years in prison.
