Hector Alexander Cruz, Illegal Reentry and Firearms Possession, Lou…

Hector Alexander Cruz, 37, a citizen of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, was hit with an 87-month federal prison sentence Monday for illegally reentering the United States and possessing multiple firearms as a convicted felon. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter in Lafayette, La., marks the end of a case rooted in a routine drug complaint that uncovered a far more dangerous threat.

Cruz was arrested after Lafayette police responded to a reported marijuana odor at a University Avenue residence on July 25, 2016. Officers encountered Cruz and two others inside the apartment and immediately detected a strong smell of marijuana. After questioning the occupants and securing a search warrant, authorities uncovered a cache of weapons: a 9 mm pistol, a .22 caliber pistol, a .380 caliber pistol, and multiple rounds of ammunition.

Further investigation revealed Cruz had no legal right to be in the country, let alone possess firearms. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed Cruz had been formally removed from the United States in December 2011 following a prior conviction for an aggravated felony. His return to the U.S. constituted a federal crime, compounded by his possession of weapons as a previously convicted felon.

Cruz pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of illegal reentry of a removed alien and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The dual charges carried significant weight, with federal prosecutors emphasizing the danger posed by armed felons illegally residing in the country.

The investigation was conducted jointly by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Lafayette Police Department, highlighting ongoing cooperation between federal and local law enforcement in targeting violent crime and immigration violations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert C. Abendroth prosecuted the case, pushing for a sentence that reflects the seriousness of Cruz’s criminal conduct.

U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley underscored the federal government’s commitment to prosecuting illegal reentries, especially when combined with firearm offenses. “Individuals like Cruz, who reenter the country illegally and then arm themselves, pose a direct threat to public safety,” Finley said. “This sentence sends a clear message: we will pursue and punish those who break our laws and endanger our communities.”
