Martir Perdomo-Chavez, Illegal Reentry of Deported Alien, Louisiana 2023

NEW ORLEANS – Martir Perdomo-Chavez, 44, a citizen of Honduras, is facing federal charges after allegedly violating U.S. immigration law. U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced the indictment today, detailing a case of illegal reentry after a prior deportation.

The indictment, handed down on January 26, 2023, accuses Perdomo-Chavez of violating Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a) – illegal reentry of deported alien. Federal authorities allege Perdomo-Chavez was found within the United States around January 5, 2023, despite having been previously removed from the country on or about June 11, 2008.

This isn’t a first offense. The feds say Perdomo-Chavez already served his time and was deported once before, making this a repeat violation of federal law. Details surrounding the initial deportation and the circumstances of his latest entry remain scarce at this time, but the U.S. Attorney’s office is pursuing the maximum penalty.

If convicted, Perdomo-Chavez is looking at a maximum sentence of two years behind bars. But that’s not all. He could also be hit with a hefty fine of up to $250,000, a year of supervised release after serving his time, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee – a standard penalty in federal cases.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended the work of the United States Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for their investigation into the matter. ICE agents reportedly played a key role in identifying and apprehending Perdomo-Chavez, triggering the federal indictment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis is leading the prosecution of this case. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system. Expect a fight; these types of cases often drag on, and Perdomo-Chavez will likely fight the charges vigorously. The question remains: will he face the full weight of the law, or will he slip through the cracks again?
