Albino ‘Albie’ Folcarelli, a 54-year-old Johnston, R.I., resident, was sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for participating in a Hobbs Act extortion conspiracy. Folcarelli, an admitted associate of the New England La Cosa Nostra, pleaded guilty to one count of Hobbs Act extortion on May 4, 2012.

According to court documents, Folcarelli conspired with Raymond R. ‘Scarface’ Jenkins, 47, and Edward ‘Eddy’ Lato, 65, to extort $25,000 from a Rhode Island individual. The conspiracy involved visits to the individual’s place of employment and home, where implied threats of violence were made.

Folcarelli’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith, who also ordered the defendant to serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. Folcarelli will also have to pay $25,000 in restitution, jointly and severally with co-defendants Jenkins and Lato.

Lato, the admitted NELCN capo, is serving a 108-month sentence in federal prison for his role in the extortion conspiracy. Jenkins, a fellow co-conspirator, is serving a 37-month sentence for his involvement in the shakedown of Rhode Island adult entertainment businesses.

Folcarelli’s conviction is part of a larger crackdown on organized crime in Rhode Island. In total, seven men have been convicted and sentenced for crimes related to racketeering and extortion, including admitted NELCN crime boss Luigi ‘Louie’ Manocchio, who is currently serving a 66-month sentence.

The FBI, Rhode Island State Police, and Providence Police Department investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William J. Ferland and Trial Attorney Sam Nazzaro of the Criminal Division’s Organized Crime and Gang Section.
