ROBERTO UMANA-ROSA, age 45, a native of Honduras, pled guilty today to illegally reentering the United States after prior deportation—a federal crime carrying up to ten years behind bars. The plea, entered in federal court in the Eastern District of Louisiana, marks the latest enforcement action in the ongoing crackdown on repeat immigration violations.
According to court documents, UMANA-ROSA was formally removed from the U.S. on October 15, 1998. Despite that order, he was found back on American soil—specifically within the jurisdiction of the Eastern District of Louisiana—on June 13, 2017. At no point had he obtained legal permission to return from either the U.S. Attorney General or the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
The charge stems from a one-count Indictment for illegal entry of a removed alien, a felony under U.S. immigration law. Prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of circumventing deportation orders, calling it a direct challenge to federal authority and border integrity.
UMANA-ROSA now faces a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt has scheduled sentencing for June 6, 2018, where the final consequences of his actions will be determined.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans, who oversaw the announcement, commended the investigative work of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for tracking and apprehending UMANA-ROSA. Officials stressed that individuals who reenter the country illegally after removal remain a top enforcement priority.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri. The case underscores the federal government’s sustained efforts to prosecute immigration violations with the full weight of the criminal justice system.
