BOSTON – A Honduran national, Rumeni D. Romero, 32, faced court yesterday in a plea deal for illegal reentry into the United States after being deported multiple times.
Romero admitted to having been previously deported four times and entering the U.S. without permission during an encounter with agents in Chelsea in January 2017.
His legal troubles began in 2004 when he was first determined to be present in the country illegally and put into removal proceedings. He was later deported to Honduras in 2006. Romero’s illegal status was again confirmed in 2010, leading to his second deportation to Honduras. His third deportation followed in 2013 after being caught again by agents in Texas.
The federal charges against him carry a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for July 11, 2017, under the guidance of Senior Judge Douglas P. Woodlock.
Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and Matthew Etre, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, announced Romero’s plea today, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine handling the prosecution.
