Ex-Boston Teacher Gavin Indicted in CSAM Ring
BOSTON – A former science teacher at Josiah Quincy Upper School, John Magee Gavin, 35, of Brookline, is facing federal charges after allegedly engaging in a predatory online scheme targeting underage girls across the country and internationally. A federal grand jury in Boston indicted Gavin on one count of coercion and enticement of a minor, one count of receipt of child pornography, and one count of possession of child pornography.
The investigation, which began in January 2025, revealed Gavin allegedly used a Discord account to message at least 20 females between the ages of 12 and 17 in multiple states – Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida – as well as the United Kingdom and Canada. Court filings detail how Gavin, identifying himself as a teacher, allegedly engaged in sexually explicit conversations and solicited sexually explicit images from the minors, fully aware of their ages. He was initially arrested by local authorities in February 2025 on related state charges.
A forensic examination of Gavin’s iPhone uncovered a chilling cache of 147 files – 94 images and 53 videos – depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The content allegedly portrays the sexual abuse of minors ranging in age from approximately five to 17 years old, including depictions of rape. The depravity of the material paints a disturbing picture of the defendant’s obsession.
The investigation further revealed that Gavin wasn’t confining his predation to anonymous online chats. Analysis of his Discord account showed numerous instances of online masturbation sessions with minors, image exchanges, and explicit conversations, some of which allegedly occurred while he was actively employed as a teacher. Disturbingly, chats also allegedly contained discussions of Gavin’s sexual interest in specific students at Josiah Quincy Upper School, including a freshman student he fantasized about sexually assaulting.
Gavin’s prior employment history includes a 6th grade teaching position at the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School in Hyde Park and a role as a paraprofessional with the Brookline Public Schools. If convicted on all counts, Gavin faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with the potential for life imprisonment. He also faces substantial fines and a lifetime of supervised release. The charge of receipt of child pornography carries a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 20 years, while possession of child pornography carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Leah B. Foley, and the FBI Boston Division, under Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks, announced the indictment. The Brookline Police Department, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office provided valuable assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm is prosecuting the case. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact 617-748-3274 or USAMA.VictimAssistance@usdoj.gov.
