Hermes Castillo, Illegal Reentry, Alabama 2024

MOBILE, AL – Hermes Castillo, 44, and Miguel Alvarado-Villanueva, 36, both of Honduras, faced the music this week after being sentenced for their illegal reentry into the United States. Their felony convictions were part of Operation Take Back America, a DOJ initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration.

According to court documents, Castillo and Alvarado were picked up by the Elberta, Alabama Police Department during a traffic stop on May 29, 2025. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) was quick to get involved. Castillo had been deported three times before and was no stranger to legal troubles in the U.S., including a conviction for Possession of Cocaine in Florida. Alvarado had also been deported thrice.

Both men were handed time-served sentences and ordered to serve a year of supervised release upon their release from prison – if they weren’t deported first. They’ve been locked up since their May 29th arrests, awaiting this day of reckoning.

This isn’t the first time Operation Take Back America has made headlines. In July, Miguel Castro-Gonzales, 48, and Albert Marel Padilla-Castro, 43, were sentenced for illegal reentry after being nabbed in separate incidents by local law enforcement. And in August, Antonio Flores, 41, Ali Torres-Barahona, 34, and Jorge Magana-Cartagena, 31, faced similar sentences.

The defendants have been ordered to pay $100 each in special assessments. U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama led the announcement, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws.
