Hospital Heist: Pharmacy Tech Guilty of Tampering with Pain Meds
TIFFANY MOSS, 34, of Montville, has been exposed for her brazen crime at Backus Hospital in Norwich, Conn. The pharmacy tech pleaded guilty today in Bridgeport federal court to tampering with pain medication.
According to court documents, Moss used her employee ID badge to access the secure storage area at the hospital on January 11, 2024. She then removed three bags containing a solution of hydromorphone, took a portion of the hydromorphone solution from each bag for her own use, and replaced the portion she took with saline.
Moss’s scheme was designed to get her hands on the highly addictive and powerful pain killer hydromorphone for personal use. She then returned the bags to the storage area, where they could be distributed for patient use.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Office of Criminal Investigation, DEA’s Hartford Diversion Control Division, Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, Drug Control Division, and Norwich Police Department were all involved in the investigation.
Moss pleaded guilty to tampering with a consumer product, a charge that carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years. A sentencing date has not been scheduled, but Moss is currently out on a $50,000 bond and prohibited from working in any location with access to narcotics while awaiting sentencing.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of prescription medication abuse and the importance of proper oversight and security in hospitals. The investigation was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ray Miller, who will be prosecuting the case.
