Houston Man Charged in $1M Jeep Heist Scheme

Houston, TX – In a brazen scheme, 29-year-old Kenneth Dwayne Westbrook is accused of stealing over 25 vehicles worth more than $1 million, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.

According to the charges, Westbrook used Instagram to recruit individuals, promising to pay them to rent vehicles. However, instead of returning the vehicles, he allegedly had them driven to Mexico and ignored the renters’ calls and messages.

The FBI conducted the investigation, uncovering Westbrook’s scheme, which caused a loss of over $1 million. If convicted, Westbrook faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine for each count in the indictment.

An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law. Westbrook is set to make his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Christina Bryan at 2 p.m.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tyler White and Michael Chu are prosecuting the case. The charges against Westbrook are a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in the face of online scams and schemes.

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: Kenneth Dwayne Westbrook will be held accountable for his alleged crimes. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
