McALLEN, Texas – A devastating blow to the streets of Houston came when 19-year-old Jose Manuel Trevino Jr. was handed a federal prison sentence for his conviction of importing 11 kilograms of methamphetamine into the U.S. Trevino pleaded guilty to his crime on November 24, 2014.
U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez considered Trevino’s young age and ultimately ordered him to serve a total of 75 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Judge Alvarez emphasized that this was a serious crime due to the lethal nature of methamphetamine and its quick route to lethality.
On August 15, 2014, Trevino was stopped by a Texas State trooper after he drove his vehicle into the U.S. from Mexico through the Pharr Bridge. Upon investigation, authorities discovered 11 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden within several false compartments in the vehicle’s front fender area.
Trevino admitted that he was aware he was importing controlled substances into the U.S. and would be paid for delivering the narcotics further into the interior of the United States.
Trevino is currently in custody and will remain there pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. The charges were the result of an investigation conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David A. Lindenmuth successfully prosecuted the case, bringing justice to the people of Texas. This sentence serves as a reminder of the severe consequences associated with methamphetamine trafficking.
The streets of Houston are a little bit safer thanks to the efforts of law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s office. Trevino’s prison sentence is a testament to the dedication of those working to combat the growing threat of methamphetamine in our communities.
