LAREDO, Texas – In a chilling case of human smuggling, 25-year-old Kenneth Gamboa of Houston has been apprehended for allegedly hiding 40 illegal aliens in a secret compartment within his box truck. The grim discovery was made by the Border Patrol near Hebbronville during early morning hours on August 15th.
According to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, Gamboa now faces serious charges as he prepares for his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Brian Bajew at 9:30 a.m. The case also implicates several others facing illegal reentry charges in federal court.
The criminal complaint accuses Gamboa of arriving at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Farm to Market Road 1017 in Jim Hogg County, driving a box truck equipped with paper plates. A K-9 unit alerted authorities to the potential presence of humans or drugs within the cargo area, which was later confirmed by an x-ray scan revealing what appeared to be people crammed together.
Law enforcement discovered that the storage area of the truck had been fraudulently concealed behind a false wall, effectively locking the individuals inside. Authorities had to break through the hidden compartment to free the captives. Of the 40 individuals found, 26 were determined to have previously been removed from the United States and now face charges of illegal reentry into the country.
For his role in the alleged conspiracy, Gamboa could be sentenced to up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. The investigation was led by ICE-HSI Houston with significant support from Border Patrol and ICE-HSI San Antonio. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tory Sailer is handling the prosecution.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America, an aggressive nationwide effort to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels, and protect communities from criminal elements. The operation leverages resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood initiatives.
