Tomas Alonso Moreno, Cocaine Trafficking, TX, 2014

BEAUMONT, Texas – Hard-hitting federal charges have led to a sentence for drug smuggling. Tomas Alonso Moreno, a 51-year-old Houston man, has been handed a 30-month federal prison term for cocaine trafficking in the Eastern District of Texas.

The DOJ’s Office of Public Affairs announced the sentence today. Moreno pleaded guilty on Jan. 14, 2014, to possession with intent to distribute cocaine and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark.

Details emerged in court that on Oct. 22, 2013, Moreno was stopped for a defective brake light in Liberty County. His nerves were palpable as he drove with a suspended license. Despite initially denying any illegal cargo, Moreno confessed to having cocaine in the center console during an attempted search.

He was arrested and charged by a federal grand jury on Nov. 6, 2013. This case is part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), which targets serious drug trafficking organizations and their leaders.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert L. Rawls prosecuted it. Moreno’s sentence sends a clear message: there’s no place for drug traffickers in Texas communities.
