Counterfeit Securities Scheme Unfolds in South Carolina

Columbia, South Carolina – In a shocking turn of events, 49-year-old Howard Dillon of Myrtle Beach has entered a guilty plea in federal court on charges of Conspiracy to Manufacture and Pass Counterfeit Securities.

According to the evidence presented, between August 2015 and January 2016, Dillon and his co-conspirators were involved in a widespread counterfeit securities scheme. The group would steal checks from mailboxes in Horry and Georgetown Counties, using the genuine bank account and routing numbers to create fake checks.

The defendants would then use fraudulent driver’s licenses bearing their photographs but in other persons’ names to pass these counterfeit checks at various businesses. The checks were used to purchase merchandise at one store, which was then exchanged for cash at another location in the same chain.

Howard Dillon’s sentencing is set to take place after the presentence report has been prepared by the U.S. Probation Office. The case highlights the need for continued efforts to combat financial crimes and protect the public from the devastating effects of counterfeit securities.
