JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – In a shocking turn of events, a Jamaican national has been found guilty of re-entering the United States without permission from the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Hubert E. Minott, 31, of North Miami Beach, Fla., pleaded guilty to the indictment before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson in federal court.
Minott, an alien who had been deported from the United States on June 12, 2008, was found in Somerset County, Pa. on February 6, 2014. He had unlawfully re-entered this country without receiving permission from the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to do so.
The case against Minott was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John J. Valkovci, Jr. The investigation was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security/Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Under the law, Minott faces a maximum total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. The actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history of the defendant.
The sentencing hearing for Minott is scheduled for February 19, 2016, at 10 a.m.
Minott’s actions are a stark reminder of the consequences of attempting to re-enter the United States without proper authorization. The U.S. government takes these offenses very seriously and will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
