Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, Attempted Murder, Nebraska 2025

Bellevue, Nebraska – In a disturbing incident, Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, 30, a citizen of Venezuela residing illegally in Bellevue, Nebraska, has been charged with one count of attempted murder of a federal officer and one count of assault of a federal officer with infliction of bodily injury.

According to authorities, special agents with Homeland Security Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation encountered Hurtado-Cariaco in Sarpy County near his residence while he was driving. The agents initiated a traffic stop with lights and sirens, but the situation quickly turned violent.

Hurtado-Cariaco, a suspected member of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, began to fight with one of the special agents, resulting in both landing on the ground. Despite being injured, the agent continued to engage with Hurtado-Cariaco, who resisted arrest and eventually placed the agent in a chokehold. The second agent intervened, placing Hurtado-Cariaco in a chokehold to subdue him.

After a brief struggle, Hurtado-Cariaco broke free and ran, but the agents pursued him on foot and eventually apprehended him at his apartment in Bellevue without further incident. The injured agent was transported to the hospital for treatment.

“This case highlights the deadly risks faced by law enforcement officers every day,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “We will not tolerate violence against those who serve and protect our communities.”

Hurtado-Cariaco appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Ryan C. Carson on June 20, 2025, and was ordered detained pending a preliminary hearing. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of not more than 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a term of supervised release of not more than three years.

The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
