Idabel Gun Thief Gets 41 Months

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – J’Quarius J’Vontay Austin, 18, of Idabel, Oklahoma, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 41 months for stealing firearms from a federally licensed dealer. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge John F. Heil, III, in Muskogee earlier today, concluding a case that laid bare the brazen disregard for the law in southeastern Oklahoma.

The charge stemmed from a December 23, 2024, burglary of a Broken Bow gun and pawn shop. Austin, along with accomplices, allegedly made off with a haul of 18 firearms and a significant quantity of ammunition. The heist wasn’t a victimless crime; it quickly spiraled into further violence, connecting directly to street-level chaos.

Just three days after the Broken Bow theft, four of the stolen firearms surfaced during a shootout in Idabel. Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), alongside the Broken Bow and Idabel Police Departments, swiftly connected the dots, tracing the weapons back to the initial burglary. The recovery of the firearms during the shootout underscores the dangerous trajectory of stolen guns in the hands of criminals.

Austin pleaded guilty to the charge on March 24, 2025. While the details of the plea agreement remain sealed, the 41-month sentence indicates the severity with which the court viewed the offense. This wasn’t just about stolen property; it was about arming potentially dangerous individuals and fueling further criminal activity.

The case is being touted as part of “Operation Take Back America,” a broad federal initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations. While the lofty goals of the operation are debatable, the sentencing of Austin demonstrates a focused effort to address the flow of illegal firearms and combat violent crime at the local level. The operation is streamlining efforts from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

Austin will be transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility to begin serving his non-paroleable sentence. He’ll be under the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service until that transfer is complete. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Gross prosecuted the case, bringing a measure of justice to a community rattled by the brazen theft and its violent aftermath.
