CRIMES ROCK CORPUS CHRISTI – Rafael Cortez-Gonzalez, a 53-year-old native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, has been locked away for the fourth time after unlawfully reentering the United States. The sentence: 39 months in federal prison. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the stiff penalty.
Cortez-Gonzalez’s crime spree began anew when he pleaded guilty on May 1st. Judge David Morales of the U.S. District Court, noting the defendant’s extensive criminal history, issued the sentence as a deterrent.
The court detailed Cortez-Gonzalez’s prior convictions: three felonies to his name, including illegal reentry twice and transporting an illegal alien within the United States. His first deportation was in November 2000, but he sneaked back into the country each time, the last time on February 12th in Kenedy County.
Upon his capture, Cortez-Gonzalez had no authorization to be there. Now, as he awaits transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility, removal proceedings await him following his prison term.
The Border Patrol conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Yasmine K. Tucker led the prosecution. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels, and protecting communities from violent crime.
With the sentence handed down and justice served, Cortez-Gonzalez’s repeated transgressions serve as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who flout U.S. immigration laws.
