Crime Fighters Get Boost in Forensic Science Funding
Chicago, IL – In a major victory for law enforcement agencies in northern Illinois, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois announced today that over $4 million in federal grants will be awarded to advance the field of forensic science.
The grants, totaling $4,049,739, will be administered by the Office of Justice Programs and will be used to increase the capacity for DNA analysis, reduce the backlog of DNA samples, and upgrade laboratories and equipment.
The recipients of the grants include the Illinois State Police, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, and Northeastern Illinois Regional Crime Laboratory, who will receive $2,384,863, $340,696, and $340,696, respectively, as part of the DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction Program.
Additionally, the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority and Cook County will receive $683,465 and $190,500, respectively, as part of the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program. This funding will help improve forensic science and medical examiner/coroner services, including services provided by laboratories operated by states and units of local government.
Lastly, Cadre Research Labs will receive $199,615 as part of the Research and Development in Forensic Science for Criminal Justice Purposes program. This funding will advance basic and applied research and development that lead toward more accurate, reliable, and cost-effective methods of analyzing physical evidence.
“These substantial federal funds will provide crucial resources to northern Illinois agencies working to advance the important area of forensic science,” said U.S. Attorney John R. Lausch, Jr. “The Justice Department is committed to helping state and local law enforcement improve its crime-fighting technology.”
Katharine T. Sullivan, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for OJP, added, “Developments in forensic science have given investigators an extraordinary array of tools that can be enlisted to solve crimes and bring answers to victims and survivors, often after many years and even decades.”
