BENTON, Ill. – In a stunning blow against online predators, Bryan K. Atkins, 40, of Richmond, Indiana, faced the federal bench for his sinister exploitation of children. The district judge in southern Illinois sentenced Atkins to 293 months in federal prison after he admitted to soliciting child sexual abuse material.
Atkins pleaded guilty to two counts of solicitation of child pornography, a charge that will follow him with supervised release for the rest of his life. U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft made it clear that online targeting of children and solicitation of sexually explicit images from them is a federal offense: “Targeting children online and solicitating sexually explicit images from them will earn you a federal prison sentence,” he said. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office is working in lockstep with the FBI to protect children from sexual predators and will continue to pursue high penalties for offenders.”
The evidence against Atkins was chilling. He initiated conversations with an undercover FBI agent posing as a 13-year-old child twice, asking for explicit images. The charged conduct took place on April 3 and June 16, 2024. Special Agent in Charge Christopher J. S. Johnson of the FBI Springfield office highlighted the proactive nature of the investigation: “The subject sought to coerce children into providing sexually explicit images, and without our agent’s proactive work in this case, the subject’s activities may have gone undetected until they advanced their desires,” he said.
Atkins had a prior conviction for sexual misconduct with a minor in Indiana state court. The FBI Springfield Field Office led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Sanders prosecuting the case. This sentence sends a powerful message to those who prey on our youth: there will be consequences for your actions.”
As the community grapples with the horror of such crimes, the efforts of law enforcement in this case stand as a testament to their commitment to protecting the innocent. Atkins’s fall from grace serves as a stark reminder that justice will be served.
