Indy Robber Angel Montano Gets 40-Year Sentence for Fatal Heist

INDIANAPOLIS – Angel Montano, a 22-year-old Indianapolis native, was handed a 40-year federal prison sentence for orchestrating an armed robbery spree that left one man dead and two others injured.

Montano’s criminal escapade, which spanned from July 19 to July 28, 2020, involved four robberies in the city. He utilized online marketplaces like OfferUp and LetGo to lure victims under the guise of selling a cell phone he claimed was for sale.

In a chilling account, Montano and his accomplices met potential buyers at predetermined locations, where they brandished firearms to extract cash and valuables. During one such encounter, the mother of two children was robbed at gunpoint while her children were in the vehicle with her. The woman handed over not only her iPhone but also her child’s iPhone and Air Pods.

The final robbery turned tragic when Montano executed a 26-year-old man after being approached by three masked men during a transaction. After an earlier failed attempt at the purchase, the victim returned with his brother for safety reasons. Montano blocked their vehicle with his truck, aimed his firearm through the window, and fired multiple shots, killing the brother and injuring the surviving sibling, who required hospitalization.

‘The defendant’s crime spree demonstrated his utter disregard for human life,’ U.S. Attorney Myers stated. ‘A sentence of four decades in federal prison will protect the public from this murderous criminal and brings some measure of justice to the victims.’

The investigation was conducted by the FBI with assistance from IMPD, and the sentence was imposed by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt. Following his release, Montano is to be supervised for an additional five years by the U.S. Probation Office. Assistant United States Attorney Lawrence D. Hilton prosecuted the case.
