Inmate Charged With Possession Of A Weapon
WILLIAMSPORT – Rigoberto Garay-Lopez, age 34, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution, Allenwood (FCI Allenwood), has been hit with federal charges after allegedly possessing a weapon in prison.
According to United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, an indictment alleges that Garay-Lopez was found in possession of a piece of sharpened metal with a plastic handle, commonly referred to as a “shank,” that is intended to be used as a weapon.
The charge stems from an investigation by the Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Special Assistant United States Attorney Drew O. Inman and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alisan Martin are prosecuting the case.
The maximum term of imprisonment for the charge is five years and a $250,000 fine. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Indictments are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.
Guragano emphasized the importance of keeping prisons safe for inmates and staff. “We take any allegations of possession of a weapon in prison very seriously and will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to ensure the safety and security of our prisons,” he said.
A trial date has not been set for Garay-Lopez, but if convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence and significant fines. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of prison life and the need for law enforcement to remain vigilant in their efforts to keep inmates and staff safe.
