BEAUMONT, Texas – In a grim episode of law enforcement encounter, federal inmate Juan Arturo Mendoza, 32, has been charged with assaulting two corrections officers, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
The federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Texas returned an indictment this week, leveling charges of assault and resisting or impeding a federal correctional officer against Mendoza. The altercation occurred on November 13, 2024, inside the Bureau of Prisons facility in Beaumont where Mendoza was housed.
According to the indictment, Mendoza engaged in a physical fight with two corrections officers that resulted in injuries to the officers. This incident is a part of Operation Take Back America, a broad-scale initiative by the Department of Justice targeting illegal immigration, cartels, and transnational criminal organizations.
The operation, which leverages resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), aims to safeguard communities against violent crime. If convicted, Mendoza could face up to 20 years in federal prison.
Investigation into this case is being conducted by the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell James prosecuting the matter. It’s important to note that a federal indictment does not constitute evidence of guilt; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
This brutal encounter underscores the dangerous realities faced by corrections officers on the front lines and highlights the ongoing efforts of federal authorities to combat violent crime.
