San Antonio – The grimy streets of Dilley were witness to a major bust as authorities arrested Venezuelan national Alexander Jose Barrios, also known as Alexander Jose Barrios-Pena, on Sunday. Barrios was apprehended following a harrowing chase where his ‘heavily weighted down’ vehicle careened erratically across HWY 85.
According to court documents, the U.S. Border Patrol agent who pulled over Barrios reported that the suspect’s driving was nothing short of reckless, swerving in and out of lanes and suddenly slowing to a mere 45 MPH in a 70 MPH zone. As the USBP agent’s emergency lights flickered on, Barrios’s vehicle came to an abrupt halt in the grass, with several occupants bolting into the nearby brush.
Agent’s quick thinking led to the detention of Barrios and the front passenger, while backup agents caught a female subject hiding in the backseat. Barrios now faces one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens, a charge that could land him up to 10 years behind bars. The federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas announced the charges against Barrios. The investigation is being led by the U.S. Border Patrol, with the case being a part of Operation Take Back America – an initiative that mobilizes the full force of the Department of Justice to combat illegal immigration and protect communities from violent crime.
Operation Take Back America coordinates efforts between the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), ensuring a comprehensive approach to dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). As with all criminal complaints, Barrios is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
This headline-grabbing arrest is another blow to the relentless human smuggling operations targeting our borders. The grimy details of this case serve as a stark reminder of the Department of Justice’s unwavering commitment to upholding American security and justice.
