McALLEN, Texas – In a grim turn of events, 28-year-old Carlos Alberto Salinas has been sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for his role in a botched alien and drug smuggling attempt that saw him flee across the border into Mexico. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei following a guilty plea entered by Salinas on December 6, 2024.
U.S. District Judge Drew B. Tipton handed down the severe punishment after considering Salinas’s previous convictions for alien smuggling and felony drug charges, noting his persistent disregard for the law. The court also factored in the defendant’s responsibility for transporting over 75 aliens across borders. Salinas’s attempt to evade justice was thwarted when he and several aliens attempted to swim back to Mexico following a July 24, 2024, interception by authorities at the Rio Grande River.
During the incident, Salinas was observed attempting to retrieve 10 illegal immigrants and approximately 100 kilograms of marijuana from across the river. The swift response from law enforcement resulted in the group’s capture before they could cross into Mexico. The investigation was conducted by the Border Patrol, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Devin V. Walker leading the prosecution.
