Assault in the Yard
Two inmates at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana, have pleaded guilty to assaulting a fellow inmate. 48-year-old Ernest Prado and 33-year-old Gumaro Lopez admitted to using homemade ice pick-type weapons to attack their victim in the recreation yard on November 29, 2010.
According to evidence presented during the guilty plea, corrections officers at the prison observed the attack and captured it on video. The injured inmate was transported to a local hospital, where he was found to have sustained approximately 15 puncture wounds to his upper torso.
Prado and Lopez, both serving time for possession with intent to distribute narcotics, face up to 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release for assault with a dangerous weapon. Their sentencing date has been set for October 28, 2013.
The investigation into the assault was conducted by the FBI-Alexandria, La., Resident Agency, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorney Earl M. Campbell is prosecuting the case.
Prado is serving time for possession with intent to distribute cocaine, while Lopez is serving time for possession with intent to distribute heroin.
The brutal attack has left many questioning the safety and security within the prison system. As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: justice will be served for the victim of this heinous crime.
