Iowa Man Sentenced for Sex Offender Registration Failure

A Sioux City, Iowa, man has been sentenced to 17 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender.

On September 13, 2021, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence to Jacob Lee Schmidt, 32, who had previously been convicted of a sex offense in state court that requires him to register for the rest of his life.

According to the indictment, Schmidt failed to register as a sex offender between February 1, 2021, and May 4, 2021, as required by federal law. He was subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury on May 4, 2021, and pled guilty on June 23, 2021.

As part of his sentence, Schmidt was also ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100 and undergo five years of supervised release following his prison term.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuting on behalf of the government.

Upon completion of his sentence, Schmidt was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
