Isaac Thomas, Flagpole Assault, Michigan 2021

Isaac Thomas, 20, of Flint, Michigan, swung a flagpole at fully uniformed U.S. Capitol Police during the January 6, 2021 insurrection, federal prosecutors say. The violent act — captured on video by accomplice Christina Legros, 22, of Beaverton, Michigan — is now the centerpiece of a federal case unsealed this week, charging Thomas with multiple felonies including assaulting law enforcement with a deadly weapon and obstructing an official proceeding.

Thomas was arrested January 26, 2022, in Flint, and faces felony counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon, obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, and corruptly obstructing Congress’s electoral certification. He’s also charged with entering restricted grounds while armed, engaging in violence on Capitol grounds, and disorderly conduct inside the building. Eight minutes after his first flagpole strike, Thomas struck another officer with the pole to help push rioters up the west terrace steps, court records show.

Legros, arrested in Flint the following day, is charged with misdemeanor offenses: entering restricted grounds without authorization, engaging in disruptive conduct on Capitol grounds, disorderly conduct inside the building, and parading or demonstrating in prohibited areas. She filmed Thomas’s attacks in real time, preserving evidence federal investigators say proves coordination and intent within the mob.

Together, the two breached the Capitol through the Senate Wing Door, marched across the House side, and made their way into the Crypt before ascending to the second floor. Inside the Speaker of the House office suite, Thomas recorded a defiant video message: “The United States of America thinks we were playing . . . Do not let them take our country. Mike Pence failed us today. Ya’ll better take your country back. Take your freedom back for the sake of your families and your children!”

The pair later moved to a corridor outside the Old Senate Chamber, where Thomas again clashed with officers trying to barricade the Senate Chamber. During the chaos, the two were separated and fled the building independently. Investigators from the FBI’s Detroit Field Office – Flint Resident Agency and Washington Field Office built the case using video evidence, geolocation data, and eyewitness testimony.

The Department of Justice, prosecuting through the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. and the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, has now charged over 950 individuals from nearly every state in connection with the Capitol breach. Thomas and Legros join more than 284 others facing charges tied to physical violence or obstruction. The case underscores the federal government’s ongoing crackdown on domestic extremism following the deadliest attack on American democracy in modern history.
