Anas Said, a 30-year-old Houston resident and self-proclaimed ISIS supporter, used social media to spread terrorist propaganda, including videos and guides on explosives. Said, who pleaded guilty to concealing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and making false statements, faces up to 15 years in prison. The crime occurred over an unspecified period, but Said pleaded guilty on July 24 and will be sentenced on October 16.
Said used various social media accounts to post, share, and disseminate ISIS propaganda, including discussing operational security tips and guides on chemicals and explosives. He also created his own media content, which he shared with the Sarh al-Khilafah Institution, a media entity that works on behalf of ISIS.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) conducted the investigation, with assistance from local police departments in Houston and Sugar Land, as well as the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Said’s guilty plea includes an admission to lying to law enforcement about a weapon he possessed and discussed on social media, stating that he wanted to kill as many people as possible.
Said’s case highlights the ongoing threat of terrorism and the importance of law enforcement efforts to prevent the spread of terrorist propaganda. The FBI and other agencies continue to work to identify and disrupt terrorist activities, both online and offline.
