A former high school dean from the Bronx was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 5 years for his role in a 2010 murder.
Israel Garcia, also known as Shorty Rock, was convicted of shooting and killing Alfonso Joey McClinton on a residential street in the Bronx on October 11, 2010.
The murder was part of a dispute over narcotics trafficking territory, according to prosecutors. Garcia was also convicted of engaging in a conspiracy to distribute narcotics, murder while engaged in a narcotics conspiracy, and attempted witness tampering.
Garcia, 33, was the former leader of the Get Money Gunnaz set of the Young Gunnaz street gang. He was found guilty by a jury in July 2023 after a seven-day trial.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams praised the investigative work of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York City Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
The prosecution was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces operation. Garcia will serve the life sentence plus 5 years on a firearms charge concurrently with the other sentences.
Garcia’s sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff.
