Ivan Avila, Methamphetamine Distribution, Iowa 2017

A Sioux City man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy.

Ivan Avila, 21, was sentenced to 121 months in federal prison on April 13, 2017, for his involvement in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in the Sioux City area from 2015 to January 2016.

According to court documents, Avila and others conspired to distribute methamphetamine in the area during that time period. In January 2016, law enforcement made two controlled buys of methamphetamine from Avila using a confidential source.

Avila pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and two counts of distributing methamphetamine in January 2017. He was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.

As part of his sentence, Avila must also serve a 4-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Avila is currently being held in the United States Marshals custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Ajay Alexander and investigated by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, a collaboration of law enforcement agencies from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Sioux City Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, South Sioux City Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Iowa National Guard, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, United States Marshals Service, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and Woodbury County Attorney’s Office.
