Jackson Bissonette, Firearm Possession, South Dakota 2022

Rapid City, South Dakota – In a disturbing case, Jackson Bissonette, a 31-year-old Rapid City man, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm, a crime that puts the community at risk.

According to the court records, Bissonette was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a serious offense that carries severe penalties. The conviction stems from Bissonette’s possession of a TriStar Arms, Hunter EX.12 gauge over-under double-barrel shotgun, which was found after he came into contact with law enforcement in January 2020.

Bissonette, a previously convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms due to his prior conviction. This reckless disregard for the law put innocent lives at risk, and we are glad that justice has been served.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Black Hills Fugitive Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.

As part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, the federal government is working to reduce violent crime in communities across the country. PSN is an evidence-based program that has been proven to be effective in reducing violent crime.

Bissonette was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, and he will serve his 24-month sentence in federal prison. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, a small price to pay for the risk he posed to the community.

The people of Rapid City can rest a little easier knowing that Bissonette is behind bars, and we hope that this sentence serves as a deterrent to others who would consider breaking the law in a similar manner.
