JACKSONVILLE, FL – Cory Lee Kelly (34), a convicted felon from Jacksonville, has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm while on bond for a separate firearms offense. The United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison. A sentencing date remains unannounced.
Kelly’s criminal saga began on April 28, 2022, when he was stopped by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper for a seatbelt violation. During the stop, marijuana was detected, and a Glock-type pistol with no serial number and a ‘Glock switch’ was discovered under the driver’s seat. Kelly had previously been convicted of possession of a controlled substance while armed.
On July 19, 2022, Kelly was again flagged for speeding and illegal window tint. An officer found an AR-style semi-automatic pistol with 30 rounds loaded, along with drugs, when Kelly was detained after being unable to produce a driver’s license.
Despite pending state cases, Kelly was released on bond in September 2022. However, a federal grand jury indicted him for the firearm offense, leading to his arrest at his home on September 22, where a loaded shotgun was found.
This case was investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and the ATF. Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Coolican is prosecuting the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in neighborhoods.
