North Liberty man Jacob John Preuschl, 28, was sentenced to 300 months in federal prison on January 25, 2023, for production of child pornography and transfer of obscene material to a minor — a grim outcome in a case rooted in digital predation and betrayal of trust.
Preuschl’s crimes came to light when a mother discovered sexually explicit messages between her underage daughter and an adult male on her child’s phone. She reported the content to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), triggering a cyber-investigation that led from Tennessee to Iowa. The predator? Jacob John Preuschl — a man who weaponized Snapchat to groom and exploit children.
Investigators found that Preuschl had communicated with the victim for four months, coaxing her into sending nude images and videos. He responded by sending images of his own genitals. The abuse wasn’t isolated: after seizing his cell phone, law enforcement uncovered communications with multiple minor females and evidence that Preuschl acquired child pornography via the encrypted Telegram app.
The case was investigated by the Joint Forensic Analysis Cyber Team and the Nashville Police Department, then handed off to Iowa authorities. NCMEC’s tip served as the critical starting point, exposing a predator who believed the digital shadows would keep him safe. They didn’t.
Preuschl was ordered to pay a $10,000 special assessment under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act and an additional $3,000 under the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Child Pornography Victim Assistance Act. After serving his 25-year sentence, he will spend seven years under federal supervision — a monitored existence he was denied his victims.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The case was prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Childhood,” launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation through coordinated federal, state, and community action. Authorities urge anyone with knowledge of child abuse to call the Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline at 1-800-284-7821.
