Felon Caught with Loaded Handgun in Wilkinsburg
A 25-year-old Wilkinsburg resident has been sentenced to 21 months imprisonment for illegally possessing a loaded handgun.
Jacque Butler, a convicted felon, was found in possession of a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun with 15 rounds in the magazine and an additional 15 rounds in a second magazine during a traffic stop in Duquesne on September 8, 2020.
Butler was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over for having inoperable brake lights and obstructing traffic. The officer detected the smell of marijuana and discovered the handgun and other contraband in Butler’s backpack.
Butler waived his Miranda rights and admitted to owning the handgun, which is a crime for a convicted felon to possess.
United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed the sentence, rejecting Butler’s request for a downward variance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna prosecuted the case, which was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime.
Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the City of Duquesne Police Department for their work in bringing Butler to justice.
