CONCORD – A Jaffrey man’s arsenal was dismantled after he pleaded guilty to possessing unregistered machine guns and silencers in federal court, U.S. Attorney Jane E. Young announced.
Luke Czekalski, 38, pleaded guilty to possessing firearms not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. U.S. District Court Chief Judge Landya McCafferty scheduled sentencing for September 23, 2024.
The trouble started in November 2022 when New Hampshire state parole officers made an unannounced visit to Czekalski’s Jaffrey residence. He was on parole following a prior felony conviction. During the search, parole officers found several bins in the basement containing firearms, ammunition, loaded magazines, body armor, and other miscellaneous items.
Assistance from the Jaffrey Police led to the seizure of eight homemade firearms and five homemade silencers, along with assorted firearm ammunition. Three of the firearms demonstrated fully automatic firing capabilities, making them ‘machineguns’ under federal law.
The charging statute carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $10,000. Sentences are determined by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Jaffrey Police Department led the investigation. The New Hampshire Department of Corrections’ Division of Field Services and New Hampshire Forensic Laboratory provided valuable assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles L. Rombeau is prosecuting the case.
