Jairo Hernandez, 35, Sentenced for Repeatedly Flouting US Immigration Laws

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – In a case that highlights the dangers of allowing repeated offenders to enter the country, Jairo Hernandez, 35, of El Salvador, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for Illegal Reentry by a Removed Alien. The plea and sentence was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

According to court records, Hernandez was previously prosecuted in 2018 for the same crime and deported. However, he reentered the United States in 2020 and continued to cause trouble, including resisting a law enforcement officer with violence in 2022. On November 10, 2022, he was convicted and sentenced for that crime.

“This criminal alien repeatedly flouted the United States’ immigration laws, and committed acts of violence against law enforcement while unlawfully present in our country,” U.S. Attorney Heekin said in a statement. “My office stands ready to work hand-in-hand with our law enforcement partners to detain, prosecute, and remove violent criminal aliens like this one to keep our communities safe.”

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Eric Welch prosecuted this case.

An ICE detainer has been lodged against Hernandez, meaning he will begin deportation proceedings after he serves his sentence. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is committed to upholding the law and protecting the community from violent offenders like Hernandez.
