A 26-year-old Rogersville, Missouri, man has been indicted on federal charges tied to the sexual exploitation of three young children and the distribution of child pornography. Jake Ethan Patterson faces a four-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Springfield, Mo., on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, replacing an earlier criminal complaint filed on November 2.
Patterson is charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a child, each involving a separate minor. Authorities allege he used the children—two between three and five years old, and one approximately 12 years old—to produce child sexual abuse material. He is also charged with one count of receiving and distributing child pornography, marking a broad pattern of predatory behavior across digital platforms.
The investigation began in June 2021 when Canadian law enforcement seized two cell phones belonging to a Canadian citizen. Forensic analysis uncovered Snapchat conversations between the individual and Patterson, in which he exchanged explicit images and videos involving the three child victims. The digital trail revealed multiple files of child pornography produced and shared by Patterson, according to an affidavit filed in support of the original complaint.
On July 4, 2021, Snapchat submitted a Cyber Tip to authorities reporting that Patterson had uploaded a known child pornography file the day prior. Federal investigators confirmed the image was a widely circulated video in child exploitation networks, though it did not depict any of the three victims in this case. Still, the upload provided crucial evidence linking Patterson to the broader distribution network.
Since his arrest on the initial complaint, Patterson has remained in federal custody. The indictment was brought by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Wan and investigated by a joint task force including the FBI, the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force, and the Springfield Police Department. The case reflects the collaborative effort required to dismantle digital child exploitation operations.
The charges against Jake Ethan Patterson are accusations only, and not evidence of guilt. A federal jury will determine the outcome after hearing evidence presented at trial.
