Spokane, WA – The grimy streets of Eastern Washington have been cleansed of a notorious figure. Luis Esquivel-Bolanos, alias ‘Colorado’, was sentenced to 19 years in federal prison for leading a drug trafficking syndicate that spread terror throughout the region.
The 45-year-old Mexican national was found guilty on April 16, 2025, after a jury trial. United States District Judge Thomas O. Rice delivered the harsh sentence, which also includes five years of supervised release.
Esquivel-Bolanos was a key player in a drug trafficking organization that had infiltrated communities across Eastern Washington and into central Montana. The organization’s reach extended to tribal lands, including the Crow, Northern Cheyenne, Rocky Boy’s, Fort Belknap, and Flathead Reservations.
The group, led by Esquivel-Bolanos and his co-defendant Erubey Arciga Medrano, employed ruthless tactics to maintain control. Threats and violence were used to instill fear and ensure their dominion over the drug trade. One chilling incident involved the Jalisco Cartel threatening to kill a confidential informant.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), along with other federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies, launched a series of operations that led to the seizure of over 161,000 fentanyl-laced pills, approximately 80 pounds of methamphetamine, about 6 pounds of heroin, and more than 2 pounds of cocaine. A dozen firearms were also confiscated.
Acting United States Attorney Stephanie Van Marter hailed the successful dismantlement of the drug network, saying, ‘These drugs caused serious harm across our region and especially in our tribal communities.’ The Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Tom Atkinson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to protect communities from such criminal activities.
